Arkhangelsk is called motherland of Northern history, culture, traditions, cultural and historical capital of the Russian North and the largest scientific center in Pomorjye. The most ancient epos, music, song and folklore culture, icon painting, wooden architecture, chronicles and written documents were conserved here. A number of prominent Russian writers, artists, scientists (including distinguished Lomonosov) is the pride of national science and culture.
There are a lot of architectural attractions in Arkhangelsk. It embraces a town church by the Solovyetskiy monastery and the oldest Russian building of Gostiniy Dvor (guest house). This is one of a few preserved monuments of Russian architecture of the second half of the 17th century. This building amazes by its beauty and might. The Novodvinsk fortress is located on the territory of Arkhangelsk. This is the first Primorskiy bastion fortress in Russia. The fortress was erected in 1701 – 1721 by order of Peter the first for protection of Arkhangelsk from attack of aggressors arrived by the sea.
Arkhangelsk cultural life is rich and diverse. There are three theaters and museums in the city. Different festivals, concerts and fairs are held. The international festival of street theaters wins special tender feeling among city residens and visitors. Dozens of theaters from different countries of the world arrive to join the festival. During the festival Arkhangelsk turns into street theater stage where a lot of extravaganzas, carnival procession, different workshops in actor mastery, clownery and walking on stilts take place. Arkhangelsk is the only Russian city where the new year is celebrated not just in January. In September Arkhangelsk dwellers celebrate the Pomor new year which traditionally concurs with opening of the Margoritinskaya fair. This is the main fair of Pomorjye. Its history began a few hundreds ago. The Margoritinskaya fair is not only exhibition and sale, but it is a big holiday for city residents and tourists.
