Kargopol is the town in the Arkhangelsk region on the Onega river, 5 km away from its source - the Lacha lake.
The exact origin of the town’s name is not known,there are several versions: from the name of the Duke’s prison ‘Kargovo pole‘ (‘kargo’- ‘crow’) and from Karelian ‘Karhupeldo’- ‘the bear’s place’. You can stay either in the inns,or in the guest houses. The placement price starts from 500 roubles. Kargopol is the town of the churches. Its main landmark is the Cathedral Square- the historical centre of the town. There stands the Nativity Cathedral – the oldest stone building in the town. You should pay attention to the large wooden arm, which is sticking out of the wall of the central building. It used to hold the chain, where the chandelier was hanging.
The Vvedenskaya church is situated near the Nativity Cathedral. In 1812 the property of the royal family, transported from Moscow, was stored in its cellars.
The Cathedral of the Annunciation (1692) is situated on the Old trade (Krasnoarmeyskaya) Square. The belltower is situated on the New trade Square (61,5 metre).
The St.John the Baptist Church the highest temple (35 metre) in the town. It is characterized by the unusual double domes and the octagonal windows. One more exhibition is situated in the Church named after Saint Zosima and Saint Savvatiy at the Gorka. There are the wooden temple sculpture, the carved crosses, the icons and the monuments of the Old Believers. Kargopol is attractive not only for its religious buildings, but also for its famous Kargopol clay toy. You can see how it is created and buy it in the Centre of folk crafts “Bereginya”.
The town laundry (“Poloskalka”) is a very curious place for those who are interested in the life of the countryside and the origin of the song “Poloskala Kargopolochka belye” (“The Kargopolochka did the laundry”). Valushki are the remains of the earthen berms which left from the burned prison.
There is something to watch around Kargopol.5 km away from Kargopol, in the Saunino village,- there is the wooden hipped church named after John Chrysostom with the refectory and the separate bell-tower.10 km away in the east from Kargopol, in the Big Shalga, there is the wooden hipped Nativity Church (1745).
35 km away in the west from Kargopol, in the Lyadiny village, there is the Church of the Epiphany with 12 domes (1793).
There is The National park „Kenozerskiy“ on the territory of the district.44 km away in the north-west from Kargopol there is the Aleksandro-Oshevenskiy monastery (founded in the 15th century on the Churiyega river) with stone buildings dating back to the 18th -19th centuries.
