How to reach the Arkhangelsk region

Directions

By direct flights from:

  • Moscow - flight time is 1h 45 min;
  • St. Petersburg - flight time is 1h 30 min;
  • Murmansk - flight time is 1h 50 min;
  • Naryan-Mar – flight time is 1h 20 min.
The planes are hosted by the local airport named after F.A Abramov. The airport is located 10 km from the city and can be reached by a taxi or the bus № 12, the bus № 153 (to Severodvinsk).


By a train from:

  • Moscow - travel time is 21h;
  • St. Petersburg - travel time is 21h;
  • Murmansk - travel time is about 30h.

The train goes through the transport hubs such as an Obozerskaya, Plesetskaya, Nyandoma, Konosha, Velsk. The railway connects Arkhangelsk with Syktyvkar, Vorkuta, Salekhard via the railway junction «Kotlas». 

By a car

Arkhangelsk can be reached by car along the federal highway M-8 "Moscow - Arkhangelsk" (the distance is about 1241 km). The highway passes through several administrative territories such as: Moscow, Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Vologda and Arkhangelsk. Roadside cafe and toilets are located along the highway after each 40-50 km. Gas stations are placed every 100 km. Along the highway there are hotels and guest where travelers can relax and stay over the night. The main cities on the route are - Velsk, Shenkursk, Bereznik, Emetsk, Kholmogory, Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk.

Another option is to take the regional road R-1 "Brin-Navolok-Prokshino" (the distance is about 517 km). This road connects the city Vologda and the Arkhangelsk regions. The main local towns and gas stations along the highway are: Kargopol, Plesetsk, Brin-Navolok. Near the village Konevo there is a turn to the Kenozero National Park (Plesetsk sector).

The third option is to use the regional road R-2 "Dolmatovo-Kargopol" and then to take the road to Pudozh. The main towns along the way are Kargopol and Nyandoma. The part of the road from Kargopol to the Karelia border is unpaved and difficult to drive during the inter-season period. On this site there is a turn to the Kenozersky National Park (Kargopol sector). 

Note: In winter time (from January) in the Arkhangelsk region appears an unusual ice road - zimnik. The establishment of ice crossings is highly dependent on weather conditions. Each ice crossing road is marked with weight restrictions. Mind the signs!

By the White sea

There is an opportunity to cross the White Sea from Murmansk or Belomorsk (Karelia). But such trips are not scheduled and made as a part of independent tours.


How to travel across the Arkhangelsk region

The fastest way to travel around the Arkhangelsk region is by plane. There are two airports in Arkhangelsk – the international airport named after F.A Abramov (Talagi) and the airport Vaskovo. From the airport named after F.A Abramov planes fly to Amderma, Naryan-Mar, Velsk and Kotlas.

From the airport Vaskovo tourists can travel to Primorskyi region (Verhnaya Zolotitsa - 55 min, Letnaya Zolotitsa - 1 h 55 min, Lopshenga - 1 h 20 min, Pertominsk - 1 h 50 min, Solovki Islands– 45 min), to Leshukonskyi region (Koinas - 2h 10 min, Vozhgora - 2h 35 min, Leshukonskoye - 1h), to Mezenskyi region (Dolgoschelye – 2h 35 min, Koida - 1h 45 min, Mezen - 1 h), to Onezhskyi region,. The flights operate by the «2nd Arkhangelsk Air Squadron».

Suburban train service within the Arkhangelsk region operated by "Russian Railways - Northern Railway". Information call center +7 800 775 00 00. By train tourists can reach the stations Plesetskaya (then travel by bus to the Kenozersky National Park - Plesetsk sector), the station Nyandoma (80 km from Kargopol), Velsk, Kotlas and Karpogory (then by bus or taxi drive to the villages Verkola and Sura).

Suburban bus service within the Arkhangelsk region is operated by the local Department of the Transportation.

  • the highway M-8: Velsk, Dvinskoy Bereznik, Emetsk, Kholmogory, Shenkursk, Brin-Navolok, Kargopol (seasonal);
  • the highway R-1: Brin-Navolok, Plesetsk, Kargopol;
  • the highway "Arkhangelsk-Mezen: Pinega, Kimzha, Mezen, Leshukonsky.

Suburban river service within the Arkhangelsk region has a rich diversity of the routes. Navigation time is from the end of April till the middle of November. Local river passenger transportation provided by Arkhangelsk River Port and by the Northern River Shipping agency.

Ferries to Kegostrov, Lastola, Andrianov Island, Chubola-Navolok departure from the pier st. Naberezhnaya Severnoy Dvina 71.  Ferries to Khabarka and Ostrovsky islands (Pustosh) departure from Solombala district, the st. Mayakovsky. 

Ferries to Brevennik Island (Novodvinskaya fortress) leaves from the dock of lumber mill №14 and №25.

Tickets sell directly on the board of the ferry. Payment is only possible in cash.

Sea passenger transportations to villages on the coastline of the White Sea is provided by the Shipping Company ArcticReid. The route is: 

  • along the Summer coast of the White Sea: Pertominsk, Summer Navolok, Yarenga, Lopshenga, Letnyaya Zolotitsa, Pushlakhta, Solovki
  • along the Winter coast of the White sea: Ruch'i, Kuya, Zimnyaya Zolotitsa
