Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts was established in 1960. In 1994 it was included into the State Museum Association «The Artistic Culture of the Russian North».
At present time the museum’s collection includes 30,000 works of Russian art created in the period from the 14th century to the present day. The works of local artists are the heart of the collection as well as the works and examples of the ancient Russian art and the works Russian artists, gifted to Arkhangelsk by The Imperial Academy of Arts , the State Russian Museum and the State Museum Fund in the beginning of the 20th century . In the 1960s and 80s, the Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts significantly expanded its collection thanks to successful collecting activities.
The museum houses collections of ancient northern icon painting and wooden sculpture of the 14-18th centuries, as well as a rich collection of northern folk art, including folk costume, embroidery and weaving, wood carving and painting, art metal and ceramics. The collection of the Russian art of 18 th — beginning of the 20 centuries presents the works of almost all well-known Russian artists such as F. Rokotov, K. Bryullov, I. Aivazovsky, I. Kramskoy, Ivan Shishkin and others.
Contemporary art is represented by the works of artists of various movements, including Arkhangelsk masters. The museum has the best collection in the country of modern Kholmogory bone carving — a craft that has been living in the North for more than four hundred years. Exhibitions from the museum collection are often presented in the central museums of Russia, as well as in England, Belgium, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Poland, Japan and other countries.
The State Museum Association «The Artistic Culture of the Russian North» is not only an archive of the values of Russian and modern art, but also the center of the artistic life of the city. Contemporary art festivals, concerts, classic music events have become a good tradition and are popular among citizens.
