Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor is a trade and fortification facility, built at Cape Pur -Navolok in the second half of the 17th century on the site of the burnt wooden fortress. The new stone complex occupied about 9 hectares, included the Russian and German Gostiny Dvor and was one of the biggest facilities of that time, which is not surprising — in the 17th century, more than half of Russia’s foreign trade went through Arkhangelsk .
Now it is the oldest building in Arkhangelsk. Of the entire complex, only a wall running along the Northern Dvina River and one of the six towers and a stock exchange hall built at the end of the 18th century has survived to these days. Today, residents and guests of the city can visit the restored merchant chambers of the Russian Gostiny Dvor of the 17th century and ceremonial halls of the 18th century.
Arkhangelsk Local Lore Museum — one of the oldest museums in Russia resides in Gostiny Dvor. In 2017 it celebrated its 180 year jubilee. The museum’s exposition comprises of almost the half of the entire museum collection of the Arkhangelsk region and reveals the identity of the Pomor region. The main expositions and exhibitions include modern multimedia technologies contributing to the creation of a historical and cultural image of the region through a complex of sound and visual effects.
