In 1915 the first ice-breaker bureau in Russia was opened in Arkhangelsk. Arkhangelsk ice-breakers actively participated in the research of the Arctic and the Northeast Passage.
Now Arkhangelsk is also an ice-breaker base. During the winter time they daily clean the riverbed of the Northern Dvina, direct the vessels to the port, and also take part in the ice expeditions in the White, Barents, Kara and other seas.
The citizens and guests of the town can visit the working ice-breaker. This excursion can have different routes: a) working in the Northern Dvina within the town b) travelling by the ice-breaker into the White sea to the Mudjugskiy island, c) ice works in the Kholmogory village.
