Kargopol Museum is one of the big museum of the Arkhangelsk region. It was formed as history and culture complex.
The monuments of wooden and white stone architecture of federal importance form the museum’s exhibitions. Among them there are the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square in Kargopol of the 16th-18th centuries; the temple ensemble in Saunino of the 17th-18th centuries and the Church of the Epiphany in Lyadiny of the 18th century.
There are 12 monuments of cult and civil architecture. There are more than 40 thousand items of the museum fund. The rich heritage of the unique territory of the Russian North is represented in more than 10 expositions and temporary exhibitions.
The historical exposition is situated in the building of the Vvedenskaya Church (Oktyabrskiy avenue,54). You can get acquainted with the ancient Russian art of the Kargopol district in the Nativity Church. (the embankment named after A.Baranov, 29) and in the exposition and concert hall of the Church named after Zosima and Savvatiy (Oktyabrskiy avenue, 18).
The complex of exhibitions on the traditional Kargopol culture, and also art and history exhibitions is represented in the museum exhibition centre (Lenin street, 40).
There is a wide range of events available on prior request: interactive and theatre excursions and programmes, workshops and quests, puppet plays and game programmes for visitors of different age. Once in two years the museum holds scientific conferences, where scientists and specialists from different regions of Russian and international specialist take part.
The performances by the choir of the Kargopol museum of lovers of singing “Svetilen” have great success among the citizens and the visitors to the town; the musical programmes “Muzeyniy Dvorik” in the open air are popular as well. The brightest event in winter is the annual festival of the bell-ringing art “Khrustalniye Zvony”, which takes place on the big Orthodox celebration of the Epiphany.
Kargopolye is the unique history and culture centre of the Arkhangelsk region. None of the territories of the European north has preserved tradition culture in such diversity. Being the keeper of the heritage and traditions of the unique territory, the museum is interesting as an object of cognitive, event and scientific tourism on the territory of the Arkhangelsk region and Russia.
