The Russian Arctic National Park is the northernmost and first largest specially protected natural area of Russia. The park is located on two polar archipelagos in the Arkhangelsk region: Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, which can rightfully be called the «edge of the earth.» There is no permanent resident population in the Russian Arctic.
The task of the national park is to preserve the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the Western sector of the Russian Arctic. The park is inhabited by a bowhead whale, narwhal, beluga whale, Atlantic walrus and polar bear. There are the places and objects associated with the history of the exploration and development of the Arctic — expeditions of Rusanov and Sedov, Willem Barents, who discovered these lands for Western Europeans, as well as Russian Pomors, who pioneered these lands long before him.
Ecological tourism is developed on the territory Park. In 2019, a record was registered, namely in the summer season, the national park was visited by 1306 people from 44 countries of the world.
