2. Walk along the Chumbarovka street
You can have a walk along the pedestrian street Chumbarov-Luchinsky. Here you can enjoy the architecture of Arkhangelsk (the late 19th and early 20th centuries), sculptures of famous northern writers and their heroes.

At the intersection of Pomorskaya Street and the Northern Dvina embankment in the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was Buyanovaya Pier, one of the most active trading piers in Arkhangelsk. Pomor schooners and karbasses loaded with fish, sea animals and other goods docked here.At present, there are modern houses and wooden promenade, which is pleasant to walk admiring the Northern Dvina.
On the parapet of the promenade you can see a small bronze figurine with wings, depicting a merchant with sacks of salt. This is Kudesnik - a fictional magical character. There are 5 Kudesniks installed on the embankment of the Northern Dvina, each of which is the keeper of an artifact associated with the city and the region. Salt was the important industry for the economy of region, and boats with salt and other goods used to moor here – at the Buyanova Pier.
During the river navigation period (from May to the end of October), you can take a ride on a scheduled boat to Kego Island - this is the easiest and fastest way to see the city from the river. The round trip will take about an hour. The boat to Kego Island departs from pier No. 8, located at the end of the Novotel hotel. The boat schedule can be found at the link. The Northern Maritime Museum is located in the historical heart of Arkhangelsk – on the Krasnaya pier. The visitors can take a look at original historical documents, rare book editions, maps, Pomor items, ship equipment, devices and instruments.
For Arkhangelsk as a seaport, the quay of the Northern Dvina always has been an important place. From here sailors and fishermen floated to the White sea for fishing, expeditions and voyages. Krasnaya Pristan is one of the favorite places for walks for Arkhangelsk residents.
To have enough strength for the rest of the walk, you need to take a break for lunch at a cafe or restaurant in the city center near the route.
A beautiful view of the river opens up from the carved gazebo on the high bank of the Northern Dvina. There is a legend in Arkhangelsk that it was while sitting in the gazebo, admiring the river expanses, that Alexander Green saw sunset-colored sails that inspired the writer to create his most famous work.
The bronze sculpture by Mark Antokolsky is located in a park on the bank of the Northern Dvina and depicts Peter the Great in his natural height (2 meters and 4 centimeters) in the uniform of his beloved Preobrazhensky Regiment. This monument is one of the symbols of the city and is depicted on the five-hundred-ruble note against the backdrop of the port of Arkhangelsk.
In the summer, in good weather, you can ride the Ferris wheel in the amusement park to admire the city and the expanses of the Northern Dvina from a bird's eye view. The amusement park "Poteshny Dvor" is located on Voskresenskaya Street, next to the embankment, here you will find attractions that will be interesting for both children and adults.
Arkhangelsk Merchant Yards is one of the few monuments of Russian architecture of the second half of the seventeenth century that you can still see today.
Now in the building of Merchant Yards there is the Arkhangelsk Regional Lore Museum. The museum has several expositions, which tells the story of the history of the region.
On the granite parapet opposite the Gostiny Dvor building, there is a bronze figurine of a Kudesnitsa with a whistle. The whistle in the form of a bird symbolizes the Kargopol clay toy, which occupies an important place among Russian folk crafts. This Kudesnitsa is very much loved by Arkhangelsk residents; you can often see her dressed in bright headdresses or wrapped in a scarf specially knitted for her.
For Arkhangelsk as a seaport the river embankment always has been playing an important role. Nowadays, it is a favorite walking place for locals. Here you can enjoy beautiful sunsets and the natural phenomenon midnight sun.
The Kudesnik on the embankment parapet near Svoboda Street is the first of six kudesniks installed in September 2022. He holds a chipped bird of happiness over his head, which is considered a symbol of family well-being in the North. Such a talisman used to hang in every house, usually placed under the ceiling at the entrance, so that all guests would definitely pass under it. According to legend, the bird of happiness takes away all the negative, letting only the good through.
During the II World War Arkhangelsk was an important strategic point – the city received and sent allied convoys with. The place for the monument was chosen for a specific reason. Here, in 1941, for the first time ships and vessels of the first allied convoy “Dervish”.
The seal is one of the symbols of the courage of the citizens. In the worst hungry years of the II World War, the seal saved the northerners from hunger. The light pedestal of the monument symbolizes an ice floe, and the dark base symbolizes the cold black waters of the Arctic.
Arkhangelsk is a multinational city, people of various confessions have always lived here. Kirkha or Kirka - the building of the former Lutheran Church of St. Catherine. Today, this is the Chamber concert hall of the Pomor State Philharmonic Society.
