Kargopol is very well known over the Arkhangelsk region as a town, which preserves and promotes local crafts and folk art. In 2019 Kargopol received status as Creative City awarded by UNESCO. On the official logo placed symbols — local clay toy and ginger cookie called teterka.
In November 2019 UNESCO designates Kargopol as a Creative City in the network field of crafts and folk art. This network is aimed to unite cities whose development is based on creativity: arts and crafts and folk art, music, design, literature, gastronomy.
Kargopol is a «bear land» or a «crow field», one of the oldest trading towns of the Russian North, famous for the traditions of artisans and merchant dynasties. Nowadays, about 100 craftsmen live in Kargopol, who keep the traditional craft alive. During the year the town hosts several art-festivals and cultural events, which promote preservation and development of traditions in the local community. Furthermore, this activity could be considered as an effective driver for the development of the area.
