The famous writer Fyodor Abramov was born and raised in Verkola, and later the village became the prototype of Pekashin in his famous tetralogy «Brothers and Sisters». Verkola is located on the Pinega River, about 50 kilometers from Karpogor. This is one of the most attractive
«Verkola stands on one of the most beautiful places in the Russian land. And not only Russian ...» - wrote F. Abramov. From a steep hill, far endless forests, a passing river Pinega and meadows are far visible. And on the left bank of Pinega, opposite Verkola, there is the existing St. Artemievo Verkolsky Male Monastery.
The favorite countryside spot of the villagers and their guests is The Mount Myza (Red Hill). It offers breathtaking views of Pinega, the St. Artemievo Verkolsky Monastery, the village and the Khyarga spring.
The literary and memorial museum of F. A. Abramov is located in Verkola. It annually hosts the literary festival «And they harvest hay stacks in Pekashino ...» , recreating the atmosphere of the ancient festival of the First Mowing and popularizing the work of F. A. Abramov.
